Reactivate Before You Acquire

Every job site has two audiences. The one it is paying for right now, and the much larger one it already paid for and stopped hearing from.

The first audience gets all the attention. Paid search, job feeds, affiliate traffic, email co-registration, whatever mix keeps the top of the funnel full. Each new registration has a price, and everyone in the building knows roughly what it is.

The second audience is the dormant file. Hundreds of thousands, often millions, of people who registered, searched, maybe applied, and then went quiet. They cost real money to acquire. Most of them never cost another cent, because nothing is done with them beyond the occasional blast that mostly proves how many addresses have gone cold.

The math is not close

Winning back a user you already have is a fraction of the cost of finding a new one. There is no click to buy. There is no landing page to convert. The account exists, the resume is often still on file, and the email address is already yours. The only cost is the send, and the only question is whether the message lands at a moment the person cares.

That last part is the whole problem. A dormant user is dormant on your site. It says nothing about whether they are dormant in the job market. Someone who registered with you two years ago and has not logged in since may have started a new search last Tuesday, on someone else's site. To you they look dead. To the market they are one of the most valuable people you could reach, because they are actively looking and they already know your brand.

Blasting the whole file to find these people is what most sites do, and it is why dormant reactivation gets a bad name. The response rate is low because most of the file is genuinely not looking. Deliverability suffers. Complaints rise. The program gets cut back to quarterly, then to never.

The fix is not a better subject line. It is knowing which of your dormant users are looking again, so you mail those and leave the rest alone.

How CoverClicks tells you

CoverClicks is a network of job publishers that share signal about what their users do, under one consent framework, matched on hashed identifiers so no publisher ever sees another's user list.

You contribute a hashed copy of your dormant file. When one of those people visits or registers on another job site in the network, we tell you. Not who they are to anyone else, not what site they were on, just that a user you already have is active in the job market right now. It arrives as a daily file, and for publishers who want it, in real time as it happens.

That turns a dormant file from a liability into a targeted list. Instead of mailing two million people to find the forty thousand who are looking, you mail the forty thousand. Response goes up because every recipient is in the market. Complaints go down because you stopped writing to people who moved on. The economics of the send flip from marginal to obviously worth it.

Then make the first message count

Knowing that someone is looking again is half of it. Knowing what they are looking for is the other half.

For every user the network has enough signal on, CoverClicks also returns the occupations and the employers that person has been most interested in, drawn from activity across the whole network rather than your site alone. That comes back on the same dormant file and in real time through the API.

So the reactivation email is not "we have new jobs." It is "registered nurse openings at the three health systems you have been looking at." When the person clicks through, the search is already filled in. When a lapsed user re-registers, the form is pre-filled with the occupation they actually want, not the one they typed two years ago.

The same data works at the front door. A new visitor the network already knows arrives with their interests attached, so the registration page can ask for less and get more.

What it costs

Nothing beyond what you already do to participate. Publishers in the network are paid for the traffic they contribute, and the re-engagement signal and the interest data come back at no charge. The one requirement is fairness: the network can only know what your users are looking at if your integration tells it. The standard pixel already does. Sites that contribute the signal receive it back.

Where to start

If you have a dormant file and a registration cost you would rather not keep paying twice, talk to us. Most publishers go from first conversation to live participation in days. The first dormant file usually comes back with more active users in it than anyone expected.

Get paid for your traffic. Get back what your users want.
